John Cobb is the Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security.
Agriculture and Food Security covers various agencies and authorities including:
John has been active meeting with various groups, including interest groups and regional industry organisations. It is by getting to the coal face and meeting the people directly involved in the industry that John and the Opposition can develop quality policy and argue against decisions which will adversely affect the industry.
Since taking on the Shadow Agriculture portfolio, John has argued for banks to cut interest rates for farmers and small business and was active and successful in his lobbying to have many areas have their Exceptional Circumstances drought support continued.
Through his role as President of the NSW Farmers’ Association, John has many contacts in the industry and understands the needs of the agriculture industry, as well as the many hurdles it has to face.
The continuing drought, and maintaining support for primary industry, is one of John’s key concerns at the moment. He is also very worried about the effects of any carbon trading or emissions trading schemes, and how that is going to affect the primary industries he represents.
The abolition of the single desk for wheat is something John also fought vigorously against, and he joined his Nationals’ colleagues in voting against this legislation in the Parliament.
