| Coalition Instigates Wide Ranging Senate Inquiry into Farmers Property Rights | Email this page | | Back | Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Food Security, Fisheries and Forestry John Cobb says Federal Minister for Agriculture Tony Burke continues to let the rural community down after he refused to address today’s protest rally outside Parliament House. Mr Cobb said it was now obvious that the Labor Party was refusing to give farmers a fair go and the Coalition would be instigating a wide ranging Senate inquiry into Property Rights to ensure that even if the Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke wants to ignore farmers and refuses to give them a fair go – farmers will have the opportunity to talk directly to Parliamentarians about their concerns. “This rally is about farmers getting a fair go and it doesn’t bode well when the Minister can’t be bothered to give farmers the time of day, never mind a fair go. “Our food producers need a someone who will stand up for them in the Rudd Cabinet and the Minister responsible for Agriculture, Tony Burke has refused to even talk to farmers who have travelled hundreds of kilometres from places like Burke and Nyngan to try and get a fair go. “The rally was a perfect opportunity for the Minister to speak to explain his Governments position on the important issue of property rights”, Mr Cobb said. “I know many farmers are also keen to speak to Mr Burke and the Rudd Government about a myriad of issues facing agriculture and a very concerned about the Nation’s future food security and how they are going to feed the country if their genuine concerns aren’t listened too. “But instead we have seen the Minister once again turn his back on his constituents.” “A lot of people are putting their farms, their lives and their businesses on hold to be at the rally today”, Mr Cobb said. “It’s a pretty sorry state of affairs when even these sacrifices can’t attract an audience with the Minister.” Mr Cobb said the next great property rights battle will be around water and he predicted the Rudd Government would do everything it can to continue the Labor tradition of destroying property rights.
